This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The Young Kings at our school have been charged with changing the narrative about males of color nationally and abroad. This is a challenge that our students undertake each day on many different levels.
Although we are in the nation's capital, our school is located in a ward that is economically disadvantaged.
However, Young Kings understand the importance of finding solutions to change practices, mindsets, and oppressive policies. Young Kings also understand that success comes from perseverance through failure.
Our school is our sixth year of existence. We have expanded to include a new classes of Young Kings and we continue to serve and prepare them to become leaders in the community, nation and world.
My Project
Washington, D.C., has seen rapid growth and transformation as entire communities have been cleaned, built up, and transformed over the last few decades. The rapid changes have created safer and cleaner areas for community members and families.
However, neighborhoods in West Baltimore continue to suffer from trash, debris, and overgrown vegetation in the horrendous number of vacant lots.
These blights encourage loitering and other crime that comes with hopelessness and despair. We must act.
In a traditional year, service trips include travel abroad to engage in community service and cultural immersion. Yet, while we are experiencing international travel restrictions, what better way to serve the world than going to our neighboring city and delivering the gift of clean public spaces. With our physical labor, tools requested for this project, and local partners to advance our plan, we can change neighborhoods and lives.
