My Students

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book and had an epiphany as a result of the story's effect on you? I watch the end of Shawshank Redemption anytime I want to remember how important hope is to us as human beings. The book I'm requesting, Unwind, will spark similar epiphanies in my students.

My students attend an urban, public high school in a major Californian city.

They are stereotyped negatively by those outside their neighborhood, but the reality is that they are kind, happy and motivated to be a positive force in our world. More than anything, they have hope that tomorrow will bring as many smiles as it does tears. Ensuring that they have equal access to quality teaching and materials is paramount to the success of our nation.

My Project

The novel Unwind is a chilling vision of what might happen when individuals stop trying to understand other people's beliefs and when society cannot reach reasonable conclusions about hot button issues. It tackles themes of hope, media literacy, morality, power & authority, and resilience, and its ending is one of the most emotionally stirring conclusions to a story I have ever experienced.

My 10th graders have done amazing work this year looking at weighty issues like terrorism, abuses of power, privacy vs.

security, the responsibility of the media, and patriotism. I feel they are well down the path toward using language to empower themselves, as well as establishing themselves as responsible and informed citizens. This novel will serve to enrich them in both areas.
