This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a school about an hour away from the city of New Orleans. In this area most kids have parents who work in the gas and oil industry, and while this is worthwhile, I would love for my kids to explore college and work outside of this area. Many have never traveled outside the state. My students are curious, excited, and are always asking questions about places they want to go, or about things that interest them.
I love that my students show an interest in science, and I love teaching in Louisiana, where the students have so many issues we can explore that apply to them directly.
My Project
The state of Louisiana has just adopted Next Generation Science Standards. These standards require teachers and students to approach science from a different perspective than what we're used to.
In order to utilize the process effectively, students will need to enhance their learning through research online and with digital resources.
Our school lacks enough technology to reach all students on a daily basis; but as a biology teacher (whose kids are tested yearly and whose scores make an impact on our school's performance score) I feel like they deserve the materials to give them the best possible chance at success.
I am trying to obtain 16 Fire 7 Tablets, and protective cases, so that my students can work in pairs to do research and access digital material online.
