Using Picture Books to Teach Tricky Math Concepts

My students need specific math picture books in our classroom library to support them in their learning and understanding of multiple math concepts.

My Students

My students are second-graders from various backgrounds, neighborhoods, and experiences. There are a variety of genders and ethnicity and all contribute to our class community. My students are eager to learn and make connections in everything we do. As a teacher, I watch my students daily having to deal with struggles and challenges because of not being able to connect to our literature, science, and math curriculum because they have not had access to important skills opportunities or experiences in their home lives.

My Project

These books will help make a difference in my students' learning by allowing me to present them with different picture books focusing on a specific Math skill. There are many types of learning styles. A picture book can help explain concepts visually and in a way that my 2nd grade students can easily relate to.

These picture books will be used as an introduction of these specific Math skills.

Thus presenting, engaging, and creating a base for deeper understanding of the skill that is being taught.

For example, one story I chose to purchase is "A Fair Bear Share" where students are introduced to the concept of regrouping. This concept is difficult for many students at this age to not only understand why it needs to be done, but also to remember the varying steps that it entails to successfully regroup whether using addition or subtraction.
