Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students may consider themselves media and tech savvy because they can use Instagram and text 50+ WPM. One of the goals of my class is to ensure that students are truly informed and critical consumers and users of media, applying it in meaningful way to learn and express important ideas.
I work at a public charter school serving students in the city of Providence.
Although we are a charter, we do not select students based on test scores or grades- we operate on a lottery system, and therefore have a population that is consistent with public schools in our city. Many students apply to our school because they were struggling or "falling between the cracks" in the larger, more conventional institutions, hoping that our small community will help them to be successful through our strong social-emotional support and engaging curriculum.
My Project
These juniors will be spending the first trimester of the school year exploring the ways in which humor can be used to create social change. They will research how this has happened historically, become proficient in various comedic techniques used in writing and performance, and delve deeper into their own beliefs about tough social issues.
Their final project for this unit will be to use the iPad Air to create and film a performance modeled after a TED Talk, (which must incorporate a humorous hook), or a stand up routine that addresses a specific social issue. Students will be responsible for editing this footage and submitting a finished product, which will be used in an all-school presentation relating to inspiring social change.
By completing this project successfully, my students will develop media and technology strategies, a strong sense of social responsibility, and an understanding of the ways humor can be used to inspire positive change.
Thank you to everyone who helps me with this project- every little bit helps!
