My Students

Would you dig a lake with a hoe? That's what we do everyday when we ask our six grade students to come in a classroom, sit, and learn from a textbook. They engage with technology everywhere except the classroom. I want to provide my students with 21st century tools.

I have a diverse group of six graders that include students from Russia, Turkey, Mexico, as well as those that are born in America.

These students from all economic levels, but about 75% of them are low income. Three of my 4 classes are at the basic level, but I find these students to be very capable. They have a common thread and that is a love of and a knowledge of the use of technology. When I design an activity with technology in mind they all engage.

My Project

I bought an IPAD for my personal use and decided to take advantage of its educational apps. Some of the students who had not moved for two weeks in my room came alive. I have since borrowed enough that allows me to plan activities around their use. I hear things like, "I love math." I see them work together, show, respect and patience. I have seen their grade improve and their work ethic grow. They are making connections because they are not only practicing and learning basic skills that 6th graders don't always have or know that they have, but they are applying those skills while developing projects that require them to engage with the vocabulary and sequences of math. The projects that we do are integrated with other subjects. They write, research, and most of all teach each other with the use of the IPAD apps. These same apps can be used on the IPOD.

Technology is the great equalizer.

The difference is the availability to some students. With technology, students really became teachers and teachers become facilitators. I want to make technology available to my students. An IPAD is not an option at this level, but the IPOD offers the same support.
