My students need timers in order to ensure every minute in the classroom is being maximized. this includes timing the minutes they are out of class with clipboard timers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My scholars are excited for the lessons they are learning in their classroom. They have teachers that are teaching like their hair is on fire and students are constantly striving to take their learning to the highest level. Students interact with one another in their learning and push their thinking
My scholars are 98% free and reduced lunch and many of them are coming to our school for the first time from a variety of schools all over the city as they begin their middle school experience.
In the first few weeks of their school experience they bond together and learn what it truly means to be team and family and to make a commitment as a group that no student should be left behind. As a school we believe that it takes a village to raise each scholar and our school is designed in four villages, one for each grade level, and we fold these villages into one whole village that is our school. Families do their best to be highly involved in their scholars' learning and we make every effort to connect families to their scholars' schooling by making frequent home-visits, picking up parents so they can spend the day with their scholar at school and being in constant communication with our families. This population continues to meet and exceed state standards due to the village approach.
My Project
Our classes are designed to be 84 minutes long and within that classroom every teacher teaches bell-to-bell. Having a timer for each teacher that they can wear around their neck ensures that there is no wasted time in the classroom. Teachers will communicate the amount of time their scholar has for each part of the teaching cycle and then set the timer to ensure that there is no time wasted and that time doesn't just gently tick by until the end of the period. This matches the planning cycle the teachers will do and gives scholars a clear visual understanding of how to maximize their learning activities. The clipboard timers will be used for scholars to easily track any time they are out of the classroom and communicate this time to families. Scholars will sign-out on sheets on the clipboard and start the timer. When they come back into the classroom they will end the timer and continually track how long they are out of class as a way of building the habit of not remaining out of class
This donation will improve the classroom as well as build teacher and scholarly habits of urgent patience.
It will change students' thinking about the importance of education by ensuring they are continually engaged in their lessons with no time wasted. This project will build lifelong habits for scholars about the importance of respecting time and getting the most out of every learning opportunity.
