Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with 135 8th grade English students each day, most of whom live within a 5-mile radius of our middle school. Most of them qualify for free/reduced lunch, and my entire school receives free breakfast. These students are bright, inquisitive, and almost ready to monitor their own learning.

While my 8th graders would prefer to be let completely loose to do their next research project, they actually still need guidance toward high quality sources.

I know they will be comfortable using a print source I have chosen for them.

My Project

Common Core Standards for 8th graders in English Language Arts include a section on Research to Build and Present Knowledge. Students must gather information from several sources for this project, using both print and digital formats. Eighth graders are not proficient in determining the quality and validity of research sources.

Since it is difficult for 8th graders to determine the quality of the sources they use for research, having They Stood Alone and Dare to Dream available in class solves this problem.

Both books are well-written and full of excellent examples of well-known people who have stood up for their beliefs, in spite of the consequences, which is the guiding idea for the research they will do.
