Common Core Standards for 8th graders in English Language Arts include a section on Research to Build and Present Knowledge. Students must gather information from several sources for this project, using both print and digital formats. Eighth graders are not proficient in determining the quality and validity of research sources. Since it is difficult for 8th graders to determine the quality of the sources they use for research, having They Stood Alone and Dare to Dream available in class solves this problem. Both books are well-written and full of excellent examples of well-known people who have stood up for their beliefs, in spite of the consequences, which is the guiding idea for the research they will do.
