Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an amazing, vibrant group of students representing a wide range of cultures and family structures. Most of them walk or take the bus to school from low-income neighborhoods, and they are working incredibly hard to get into the high schools of their dreams. Since English is a second language for many of my kids, independent reading is vital for strengthening their literacy skills. I want to build a classroom library filled with books that mirror my students' own lived experiences. Having representation on our shelves will help turn reading during free time into an exciting, joyful choice rather than just another assignment.

Getting teens to swap a flickering screen for a physical page can feel like an uphill battle, I hope to achieve this by having the right selection of books and magazines in my classroom library.
