My Students

Last year, my students walked into my classroom, and throughout the year they became writers, murder investigators, SLAM poetry competitors, creative geniuses, literary critics,social justice advocates, researchers, and more importantly, readers. For any student, these feats would be amazing accomplishments for eighth graders.

For my students, accomplishing so many successes in an English classroom takes a plethora of mentorship, grit, perseverance, and hard work.

They reside in an overwhelmingly diverse district-- Brittany Woods Middle School is comprised of 85% African Americans and over 70% of our student body is on a free and reduced lunch program.

However, I would not like the struggles of daily life to be the focus of my students’ identity; my students are much more than a small number in a larger percentage. My students are our next leaders. They are hardworking, and even more importantly, deserving of all the good things that come along with districts who have better access to more advanced educational supplies.

My Project

Universal design and collaboration are more than just buzzwords in education; both are words that are necessary when creating an educational atmosphere that focuses on accessibility for each individual student while also promoting collaboration. For both of these essential components to be effectively implemented in the classroom, physical factors--desks, for example-- must be put into consideration.

Currently, my students are using kindergarden-sized tables that lack the ability to move easily in the classroom (and are also very uncomfortable for my constantly growing teenagers).

By receiving new desks, the educational atmosphere will be completely remodeled. Students will be encouraged to collaborate, take accountability of their own learning by moving to spaces in the room that better their concentration and focus, in addition new desks would provide a way to make the classroom accessible to all students regardless of physical and cognitive needs.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
