Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach a class of 20 smart and kind students in the area of Dallas, Texas. My kids come from a predominately low socioeconomic community. Although my students come from harsh and rough lifestyles, they are some of the happiest kiddos I know. In our class, we put our differences aside and become one learning environment for everybody. For many of my students, bringing school supplies is hard at the beginning of the year. This is where our hardship for the school year begins. As teachers, we try and purchase as many supply items as we need, but they quickly begin running out. Our school is only able to provide one set of ink for an entire school year! While we have to purchase our own paper for classroom copies or anything else that is needed.
My Project
Hello, and welcome back to our space of learning where we ask for materials that will benefit my little hearts! I am kindly asking for a subscription of scholastic magazines in ENGLISH for my bilingual students. Although the magazines are leveled pre-k and while my students are kinder, this level is perfect for my kiddos. We will put these materials into use during our math block where we speak English during the entire block. This resource will be great because we can use this as a cross curriculum strategy where we will apply language arts along with math content. These students come from primarily Spanish speaking homes and it is at school where we apply second language learning.
Language is the road map of culture, it tells you where people come from and where they're going.
Studies show that being bilingual has many cognitive benefits. Research shows that speaking a second language can mean that you have a better attention span and can multitask better than monolinguals. This is because being bilingual means you are constantly switching from language to the other. In school, within our dual language program we use many strategies and resources where our students can explore beyond their reach.
