My Students

I am a Reading Specialist in a high-need inner-city school where most of our students come to us from public housing.

My students are aware of their learning loss and are anxiously trying to improve.

They work hard and they are eager and excited to learn.

My students are high-risk students who need this school and the love and support of its teachers for more than just an education. Our students deal with weekly incidents of trauma, based on the horrific incidents that occur in our neighborhood. Through community outreach, our students are provided uniforms, hats, gloves, and some school supplies, etc. We are currently assessing and addressing the effects of the Pandemic Learning Loss. I teach students in KG - second grade, some of whom do not know their letters or letter sounds.

My Project

Many of my readers have been playing catch-up all year. From phonics to decoding and comprehension--we are really practicing all of it over and over. One thing that I have found imperative to learning to read fluently, is the love of reading.

Graphic Novels are the latest craze with my readers, especially for grades 3-5.

The Toons graphic novels are almost always their first choice. I appreciate this because the books are easy to level for a range of readers, whereas some other graphic novels are just not on any elementary reading level.

A collection like this will give all of my reading groups an opportunity to read what they like and help create a love of reading.
