Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is difficult for young students to imagine what the teacher is asking for by listening to words alone. Children need to be able to physically see the expectations of what they are being asked to do in order to produce quality work.

My students are a curious group of 2nd graders, who live in low-income, urban communities.

We are a K-8 California Charter School with a focus on visual and physical arts. My students come from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. Of my 20 students, 12 are English Language Learners with a primary language of Spanish. It is very difficult for them to learn by sitting and listening alone. They are very much visual and kinesthetic learners. The majority of my students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, coming from low socio-economic status families. They are very enthusiastic about learning! When presented with an interesting problem, they are thoughtful when trying to find a solution. They also are fascinated by technology and love when they are able to use computers or other technologies. They are caring and empathetic to each other, and are so wonderful.

My Project

All people learn through a variety of modalities whether as an auditory, kinesthetic, or visual learner. It is very difficult for children to learn in a style that is not compatible with their own learning style without extra support. Supporting tools like personal magnetic boards will help students to practice new skills using several kinds of learning modalities. They will allow myself as the teacher to see clearly whether they are grasping concepts without tedious formal assessments. Magnetic boards that resemble real-life paper will allow students to see a concrete example of what they are expected to produce to allow them to reach each goal. All of these support systems make learning a realistic goal for ALL students.

Evidence shows that having high expectations for all students is one of the most important things a teacher can do to ensure their students’ success.

Your donation to provide these tools for my students will make sure they will have concrete examples modeling what they are expected to produce, as well as the tools to practice their skills so that they can reach the level of their college-bound peers in other schools.
