My Students

I have my students write endlessly.

My students are inner city youths, all of whom are on the free and reduced-price lunch program.

Most come from low-income households and they often come to class without even the most basic of supplies such as paper, pens, and folders.

It is a skill that will be vital to them, whatever their post-high school endeavors may be. My students know written expression is my passion and it is my sincere aim to make it theirs. For most of my students the cost of school supplies is a near-impossible expense. However, despite these obstacles, the majority of my students are commendably college bound. Normally, I bear the cost of the materials they need to make it through a typical day of school. It would help if you could provide me with a bit of assistance in the coming year. Many of my students share my passion for written composition and organization. They understand its essential role in their professional, academic and personal development, I want every roadblock in their way (such as the need for supplies) to be eliminated in order to make their path that much easier.

My Project

Folders - My students have a great deal of trouble keeping their papers in order. Most of them cannot afford some of the basic necessities to stay organized. Most of them don’t know the pleasures of picking out school supplies at the beginning of the year. The use of a classroom folder helps to mitigate this problem.

Composition Notebooks - They will write their daily warm up exercise, drafts of all their major essays, creative writing exercises and notes on our daily readings.

I plan to keep these notebooks in my classroom for the students to use solely for their writing in my class. Few people scaffold and support these children as their teachers do.

Toner Cartridge - I challenge my students academically. When students are truly challenged they fail more often. However, this is not negative. Students learn a great deal from their failures and I design my courses to exploit this fact. However, the district printing system does not easily allow for custom work for students who need it. When I request documents for my students, I have a 2 week lead time. To solve this problem, my classroom printer is seeing increased volume. I know that I will not receive more toner next year and it would really help me out if I could get another cartridge to assist my students.
