My students are inner city youths, all of whom are on the free and reduced price lunch program. Most come from low-income households and they often come to class without even the most basic of supplies such as paper, pens, and folders. For most of them the $5-$10 cost of a flash drive is simply an insurmountable expense. I would wager to save that at least 70% of my students are college bound. While this is gratifying and reassuring, my biggest fear is that these students will embark on their post-secondary endeavors unprepared. It is my personal goal as their English teacher to send them off to college with a portfolio that showcases their writing. My students' work grows noticeably throughout the year and it would benefit them immensely to be able to collect a digital (as that is the way of the future) dossier of their most stellar works in order to prove their abilities to future instructors.
