My Students
My students come to school eager to learn about the world around them. They love to sit down with a friend to read, and they love to talk! Our school is an urban elementary school with many bilingual students who are learning English. Some of our students have recently arrived in the United States and did not have an opportunity to attend school before. Our school has two special programs. We have a bio-smart focus which provides enrichment and challenges in science. We also offer a Spanish and English dual-immersion program, in which students learn in two languages.
Every day I see my students working together, playing together, and engaged in learning about math, reading, writing, and science.
They are a community of learners that cares about each other.
My Project
My first graders are beginning writers and they often want my help before trying to think about what they already know. They ask me how to spell words that they have been taught, and they forget to apply what they know to figure out new words.
My goal is to help them develop skills to become more independent and use what they know in their writing.
I am asking for folders so that each child can have a place to keep his or her writing organized. The folders have a clear plastic sleeve in the cover. This will be a great place to insert a list of basic sight words from our classroom word wall that they should know and use in their writing. Instead of asking me for a word, they will be able to check their "word wall" page and find it. I will personalize this for students and give a more challenging list to some, and a more supporting list to those who need more help.
The folder also has a place to insert a letter / sound chart and rubric that helps us know that we have done our best work. My students often want to know if their work is good. With the rubric right at hand, they will see for themselves: Did I use upper and lower case letters? Did I put spaces between my words? Did I write sentences? Did I write my ideas? I want my students to develop an internal sense of when they have done their best work, and not rely on me as an adult to remind them what is expected.
My students also need small magnetic white boards to practice writing and building words with magnetic letters. Thank you for helping my beginning writers learn!
