Our elementary school is in an urban neighborhood. Many of our students are new to the United States and are learning English. We also have many students with special needs. About 85% of our families experience poverty. In spite of these challenges, our wonderful students come to school eager and ready to learn. Their enthusiasm and energy never cease to amaze me. I have the privilege of working in kindergarten and first grade classrooms and every day I see wonderful things happening. I see children pouring their energy into making friends, writing stories, and learning to read and do math. They work together and play together. They are communities of learners that genuinely care about each other.
