Tools for Instruction During COVID

Help me give my students tools to be successful learners in spite of Covid.

My Students

I teach in a small, rural community with a population of 1,400. The students I teach come from many different socio economic back grounds. Some live in a home with one parent, others live with both parents and all the advantages you can think of, while others live in homes without running water. Many students have extra worries about the health and and well being of their families. Even though they come from different situations and backgrounds they play and work well together in the classroom.

I believe in all of my students.

I want them to have all the opportunities and advantages possible that will enable them to learn to the best of their ability. Part of my job is for them to feel safe, comfortable and stay healthy in my classroom so they don't have to worry about anything but learning.

My Project

The last few years have been stressful and hard for everyone, including students. Many of my students suffer from anxiety, are distracted easily and continually worry about things that kids should not have to worry about. Some from the COVID outbreak, but also from worry about their economic situation. If a parent can't work because of sickness it could mean hunger, loss of heat, clothing, etc.

Many of my students do not have books to read at home and a library is not conveniently close by.

By adding to my personal library I will be able to send books home for them to read and have many books to choose from at school. Sometimes all it takes it a book good to get you hooked on reading and you are able to set all your cares a side.

Last year I looked into noise reduction head phones and regular headphones for electronics and how they help students. They will help block out sounds that can naturally occur in a classroom that can distract some students. Also I have researched and found that Finger Focus tools help students focus on verbal instruction. These items will help with this.

These items will help my classroom with organization, efficiency, and will become an easier place to clean and sanitize. Laminating sheets will help clean things easier. An extra pencil sharpener so students will be able to space out and not all hang out around one. I have genuinely thought about each item and will use each one in my class.
