The students in my class (and their families) have come from all over the world. Many of them have had to learn or are learning English as a second language. They love to share information about their home countries which, in turn, provides the other students with some real life connections to other places around the world.
Second graders are enthusiastic leaners!
These students are the "big" kids at the primary level. They are eager to learn new things and show the teacher and other students what they all ready know and what they can do.
My Project
In a previous DonorsChoose project, I was gifted an instant camera and film. I am in need of more film. I use the camera daily to send home photos of students working. These photos provide a way for students and families to communicate about the school day. Instead of families asking, "how was your day?" and receiving answer of "fine," students can explain what they were doing in the photo and families can ask questions about that photo, but also lead into other questions about the school day.
Communication between school and home is vital.
The homework folders are another way school communicates with families and vice versa. The homework lets parents know what learning is going on at school and gives them an opportunity to participate in that learning. Notices about school events and classroom newsletters are also send home this way. Families are able to send in notes to the school through the folder because students bring it to and from school each day.
