Ms. Lewis from Washington DC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a rich, diverse, leveled library to improve their word decoding, fluency, and overall reading comprehension by having access to books that are on their respective levels.

Our school is a Title 1 school where 100% of our students are on free breakfast and lunch. 90% of our students are African American. The student population is very transient as many of our students are homeless and live in the nearby shelter. Several students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school on-time and daily.
"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." -BB King.
Although the students face insurmountable struggles, we are still a community of learners. The breadth of skills within my class varies and the opportunity and achievement gaps are wide. My class serves students who may read more than a year below a third grade level and many students struggle with basic phonics. On the other hand, the opportunity exists to continue to develop and challenge the students who are on grade level or above.
As an educator, I want to prepare students to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers and lifelong learners by constant exposure and opportunities to read rich, diverse and leveled texts daily. There is currently no budget to fund a dynamic and enriching classroom library. Although there is no budget for materials, General Education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction to move all students to proficient and advanced levels of mastery.
My desire is for my students to have access to an up-to-date leveled library with a variety of genres.
Having access to a leveled library will improve their word decoding, fluency, and overall reading comprehension by grappling with books that are on their respective levels. Furthermore, reading books will unlock opportunities for many of my students to reach new heights regardless of their individual circumstances.
