Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
So after three years of softball in our school it is time to update our game day hammers. Our bats are composite which means that they eventually crack and are no longer useful, only good for poking dead animals. About half of our bats have reached the end of their tunnel and it is time to lay them to rest. In our hay day we would enter a game with a solid 5 broken in bats, and now we are down to two. I am requesting two new softball bats for this season, especially now that there are two softball teams, one in the middle school and one in high school. I will continue to use the dead bats for the middle school, but the high schoolers desperately need a new pair for the season. I have asked for two louisvill xeno since the one that I had survived 3 seasons with us... that's a lot of at-bats with that one hammer. Hopefully these will last just as long.
