My Students

Since I am the only specialist in our building, I teach every single student in our school twice a week in my music and movement class. Many of my students come from low income families, and many from broken homes. Many of our students walk through our doors having never spoken English. My program has no budget, and I am working with very limited resources and instruments. However, my students all come into my room with smiles, hugs, and enthusiasm. It’s what makes my job worthwhile!

My Project

Since we have limited instruments in my classroom, I’m always looking for ways to make my lessons more hands on for the students. These glockenspiels would allow every student to have a hands-on way of participating and composing their own music! My students get extremely excited when handling new instruments. Many of them have never touched a real instrument or even observed an instrument in person. The only pitched instruments in my classroom are handbells, which limit each student to one note. With a set of glockenspiels, these tiny musicians have access to the whole scale, so they can create endless melodies, and learn concepts like pitch direction, sight reading, melody dictation, note reading, high vs. low, the solfege scale, improvisation, and rhythm. This will be a great segue into learning piano, since the scale is laid out the same way. My students will be ecstatic.
