Imagine the boy from the movie Little Rascals singing, "I have a dollar, I have a dollar, I have a dollar! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!" I wish my students could sing, "I HAVE a dollar!"
My students are in grades 1 through 4, but are significantly behind grade level in math by 1 to 2 years.
The school has worked in a 30-minute intervention block so students can be grouped by ability and receive instruction that benefits their learning. My groups of students are specifically struggling with telling time and counting money and they don't have hands-on materials to practice with.
My Project
My students need gear clocks to practice telling time. Everyone should know how to read a clock and to manipulate a clock to show a given time. The gears are necessary to move the hour hand as a student moves the minute hand. This helps them understand the relationship between the two hands and that the hour hand belongs to the smaller number when it points between 2 numbers.
Hot Dots flashcards allow students to practice time and money. These cards can be grouped by ability so instruction can be further individualized. The students can work as their own pace and self-check their answers.
The sort and slide centers will help students understand different ways to represent time and money.
My students currently think 3 pennies are worth more than 1 nickel.
Yikes! You can help correct this misconception with the donation of plastic coins!
My students also need to know how to read an analog clock to figure out how much time has passed and how much time you have until an event occurs. This is an essential skill for time management, which is necessary for a job in the future.
This is a small donation request that will go a long way! And any coin/dollar you can donate will help.
