When kids have access to high-interest books that they really want to read, they are motivated to put in the work it takes to improve their reading fluency, develop their vocabularies, and strengthen comprehension skills.\r\n\r\nWhen my students ask for a specific book, it is such a joy to say \"yes, here it is!\" instead of disappoint them with one of the many boring logistical explanations for why it can be hard to get all the books we want onto the shelves. Kids live in the moment, and when they feel a desire to read something and immediately get their hands on it, they are one step closer to becoming lifelong readers. The books from this project have already generated dozens of huge grins, excited exclamations, and eager conversations among classmates about what they found in the library. My students were excited to learn about this new project. They think the MP3 players and fanny packs are fun to use. The first podcast we are using is called Smologies. It is a podcast about a topic- generally animals and an expert in that field is interviewed. The students are learning about things like bison, birds, pumpkins and toads from someone who loves that subject. They get excited listening and one student said \"Wow! I didn't know that.\" (The podcast was about pumpkins and they learned pumpkins are berries.) \r\n\r\nAs we listen to the podcast, we are walking around the school outside. This gives students a chance to move their bodies and breathe fresh air while they hear about a niche topic. We have a couple students be leaders and caboose so everyone stays together and no on is left behind. The students take their jobs seriously and make sure the class stays safe.
