Time for Kids to Explore Current Events Using Informational Text

Help me give my students an individual issue of Time Kids, so that our third graders can have the opportunity to explore informational text through current events connecting with Science and Social Studies.

My Students

Our Elementary is a Title I school with 100% of students qualifying for free lunch and breakfast. For a majority of these students, school is a source of stability. It is a place where they receive nourishment not only for their bodies, but also for their spirits and minds. Although many of our students face challenges, they possess an innate passion for learning and achieving success.

Let me tell you what truly makes our students special-GRIT.

Grit is the ability to persist despite the obstacles an individual faces. Grit is also about continuing to work hard even after experiencing difficulty or failure. No truer words could be used to describe our students.

For the past several years, the North Carolina School Report Card summarized the student performance and academic growth of our Elementary with a grade of D. As of September 2018, we were awarded a letter grade of C and learned that we successfully met our goal for academic growth with the 2017-18 school year. Our students' hard work and GRIT was most definitely a reflection of this report.

My Project

Our goal is to help improve student reading comprehension and critical thinking skills with TIME For Kids. As third grade teachers, we recognize the skills and knowledge students need to succeed in work, life and citizenship, as well as the support systems necessary for 21st century learning outcomes.

With TIME For Kids, our students can read nonfiction articles about real events and issues that are engaging and important to them.

These topics can then be incorporated into fun, collaborative lessons that range from social studies and science to world news and geography.

The majority of our students do not have access to reading material at home. The weekly/individual "Time for Kids" subscription not only provides a vital learning opportunity in the classroom, but can also be taken home to further support and promote literacy for the entire family. Students will treasure and look forward to sharing their magazine and the knowledge gained with each exciting issue.
