Our students are a diverse group of young people inside the city. Although our area is economically depressed, these children dream big! They love reading exciting novels, engaging on hands-on activities, and are interested in meaningful service projects.
While introducing this year's group of 7th graders to the idea of service learning, we explored the issues that sadden them in our community.
Several themes popped up: violence, hunger, homelessness, addiction. Virtually every one of our students has been affected by trauma related to these themes, whether directly or indirectly.
This year we are excited to begin working on service projects that will help heal our community. Our students want the freedom to be children, and they truly wish to see the world improve for their younger siblings and the others that follow them!
My Project
My students are exploring service learning this year. One theme that has come up is that our school somehow doesn't feel like a unit. We know that when we see students who are violent or disrespectful, we can help prevent those behaviors and restore those students with a strong and encouraging community. We are working to build our community by encouraging school spirit and using collaborative learning and team building activities.
One team building activity we would like to do is to have the school community dye shirts in school colors so we all have homemade spirit wear!
This project would help fund the consumable parts of the project while the school community provides the shirts.
I can't wait to see everyone wearing green. Go Hawks!
