Tidy Toilet in a Tiny House for a Homeless Veteran

My students need a compost toilet to add to the tiny house they are building for a homeless veteran. This is a necessary addition to make it a real home.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth graders come from different countries, but have similar backgrounds. My school serves at least (depending on the year) 95% free and reduced lunches. It is a city school system with many challenges.

However difficult their lives, my students have a heart for giving and helping others less fortunate than themselves.

We are building (our second) tiny house for a homeless veteran. The first house was given to an elderly couple. We plan to gift this house in September of 2018. We will then begin our third house.

My Project

The fourth graders have build 2 tiny houses from the ground up. Our first house was a simple 4'x8' temporary shelter. It housed a couple for four months until a larger, better home could be attained. Our current tiny house is 8'x16'. Other than the size, it has also been improved with vinyl siding, a window, insulation, and drywall.

"It may be a tiny house, but this is bigger than all of us," said a fourth grade student on our construction crew.

We're trying to give someone a home, a real home. This home needs a toilet to truly let the veteran know that he's home.

The students have used math in scaling, measuring, and handling the finances of both donations and purchases. They have used their knowledge of science to use the simple machine (and not so simple) tools, as well as force and motion. Engineering was used during the design and improvement processes. They have used technology for the 3D model as well as making video presentations of our process.
