This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine spending the first 10 minutes of class with 12 students at the garbage can trying to sharpen a boring yellow pencil with an old dull sharpener. Well this is how my classes usually begin.
My students are awesome 8th graders who are full of energy.
So much energy that sometimes they can't contain themselves. My classes are very diverse. I have students who were born right here in Brooklyn and some who were born on the other side of the world as far as Uzbekistan.
My Project
My students need 33 mechanical pencils. My students need 0.7mm lead to refill their mechanical pencils. My students will use the mechanical pencils while working on a variety of math skills, but especially when creating different types of graphs. Their graph will have a neat and clean preciseness because of the use of these mechanical pencils as oppose to an old fashion pencils that gets dull quickly.
Having these mechanical pencils in math class will save a lot of valuable class time.
It will eliminate the constant stopping to sharpen a pencil. Even though it only takes less than a minute to sharpen a pencil a lot of time it causes students to loose there focus and sometimes it take a while for them to get back on task.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
