Our school is located in a small, rural district in the former coal mining towns east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The students have a wide range of economic backgrounds and over 50% receive either free or reduced-rate lunch from the district.
My students are very creative and inquisitive and they use technology every day in my classroom to foster those qualities.
We use the technology to push our math lessons into the 21st century. My students are very hard working individuals and I thoroughly enjoy working with them every day. Of course, I want them to have every advantage possible but our financial resources are limited in our district.
My Project
Over the past two summers, the mathematics staff at our school created digital textbooks for our students. The books are very dynamic and the students love them. They also incorporate the TI-84 into the curriculum but not every student has access to this device and it is too costly for their parents to purchase them for these students.
The TI-84 will be used by students to push the curriculum in the digital textbook so they will have the same benefits as the students who already have their own personal technology.
The TI-84 will also be available as a loaner for students who need to use it outside the classroom to complete their assignments or for remediation. The calculators will be used to do countless activities in our classroom such as maximums/minimums of a function, manipulation of matrices, and exponential growth and decay analysis just to name a few. The charging station will be used to house the TI-84 calculators in a central location as well as eliminating multiple wires for safety purposes in the classroom.
