They also take turns to vacuum the carpet at the end of every week. These modeling kits have made a real difference in our classroom with helping students better understand complex biological processes. \r\n\r\nAs soon as the kits arrived, my students were excited. They saw the kits be delivered to my room and helped me to unpack them. They were excited to use hands-on kits as they had only seen diagrams of DNA replication, transcription, and translation. They wanted to use them right away, but I had to explain that we hadn't learned the material necessary to use them just yet. \r\n\r\nWe recently completed a project in my AP Biology class called \"Build the Blueprint,\" where students worked in small groups to model the entire process of protein synthesis. They first constructed a DNA double helix, then \"unzipped\" it to show replication. Next, they demonstrated transcription by building an mRNA strand, and finally moved on to translation by assembling amino acids into a growing protein chain. Watching them physically manipulate the models and problem-solve together showed me how much deeper their understanding was becoming.\r\n\r\nAs a review for the end of the year (prior to the Pennsylvania Biology Keystone exams) I will be having my AP Biology students guide my freshmen Biology students through the processes of DNA Replication, Transcription, and Translation using the kits. I plan to have 2 AP students serve as \"teaching assistants\" for groups of four freshmen biology students to help them with the modeling. \r\n\r\nThank you again for helping to enhance hands-on learning in my classroom.
