Think It, Design It, Print It: Bringing Science to Life

Help me give my students the tools to transform scientific concepts into hands-on learning through 3D design, printing, prototyping, and engineering challenges.

Ms. Stewart North Mecklenburg High School
Huntersville, NC Grades 9-12

My Project

My high school science students are curious, creative problem-solvers who learn best when they have opportunities to explore concepts beyond the textbook. I want my classroom to be a place where students do science—not simply read about it. They should be able to ask questions, develop models, test ideas, analyze results, learn from failure, and improve their designs.

A 3D printer will give my students the opportunity to turn abstract scientific concepts and their own ideas into objects they can see, touch, test, and revise.

Students can create physical models of scientific structures and systems, develop prototypes for engineering challenges, explore scale and measurement, and design solutions to real-world problems. Instead of ending an activity with a drawing or digital model, students will be able to print their designs, evaluate how well they work, collect evidence, make improvements, and try again.

The filament included in this project will give students opportunities to create both scientific models and functional prototypes while investigating how different materials affect a design. Flexible filament will allow us to explore properties such as elasticity, flexibility, and durability. The multicolor capabilities will help students distinguish different components within complex models. The filament dryer and storage supplies will protect our materials from moisture and reduce waste, while the tool kit will provide the equipment needed to measure, remove, refine, and finish student creations.

Most importantly, these resources will help make science more tangible. I want my students to experience the excitement of taking an idea from question, to design, to prototype, to testing, and finally to improvement. In the process, they will practice critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, perseverance, and problem-solving while experiencing the same design cycle used by scientists and engineers.
