This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
These materials will support our different growing communities in our school; immigration, genders, religions and languages. We have many students over the last few years, who are exploring their identities and pronouns. Having such books, will teach all students compassion and empathy. Our most vulnerable populations are our black/brown and LBGTQ+ students. These books will allow students to read about this and see another perspective/lens to see the world. Learning about different populations will help create an inclusive community and build friendship, not bullies. Our current population is majority Muslim. Having books sharing about their culture, religion, and celebrations will allow for learning. We know this has been a targeted population and getting books that teach, will grow bounds and relationships.
Books help students see stories, facts, and people that are different from themselves.
These books will also validate the students' feelings, culture, and life in the books. A lot of the time, people just don't know and reading books supports seeing the perspective from another person. Different perspective creates empathy and compassion for others.
