Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a bilingual speech-language therapist in an inner city public school, I serve anywhere between 40-50 students weekly. I travel between two buildings. Students work on improving one or more of the following areas: articulation, phonology, fluency, voice, pragmatics, and receptive and expressive language.

My students are diverse learners who are eligible for special education services and programs.

I provide the speech-language therapy portion of their individualized education program. The students I serve range from kindergarten to 5th grade. A great portion of them are English language learners who are doing their best in order to meet academic and language demands. They are enthusiastic about learning and really do give it their best. Unfortunately, at the present time, our school is not able to provide us with the technology or tools needed to make learning more interesting for these students. Resources are limited and the need is high. My students need information and tasks presented in multiple modalities, repeatedly, and in a language that they can understand.

My Project

My young scholars would greatly benefit from the multiple apps listed in this project (The Bilingual Articulation and Phonology Assessment (BAPA), Spanish School Bus for Kids – Learn with Fun Vocab Games and Music, Auditory Memory Club, Describe it to me, and Fono Logico Pro) as they provide opportunity to integrate technology and learning.

Many of my young scholars have been diagnosed with Autism and/or other developmental disorders and keeping them interested in a given activity for 10-15 is an arduous task.

The Apps listed will help maintain their interest level which in turn will help them learn and retain concepts taught. The assessment tool, will provide an easier and faster way to assess and treat articulation deficits. As an added bonus, the assessment tool can be used to treat bilingual students as well as monolingual students.
