The cost of sending 32 students to three shows performed by TheatreworksUSA is $665, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I teach 5th grade in East Harlem and usually my trips are low to no cost at all. This trip package is being requested for my new group of students in September because it's a lot more than my students (and families) can handle. I love teaching...not because we're learning "book smarts" (as Donald Trump pointed out in the Apprentice), but bringing stories and history alive helps make connections that books alone can't possibly achieve with my students. We read novels, particularly "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (and I would like to take my kids to see the play). Then we're going to the movie coming out in Nov/Dec (in order to compare and contrast, the novel, the play, and the movie), but that's another proposal altogether! I always teach about slavery and the Civil War...the same theatre company has performances called "Freedom Train" and "The Civil War". Theatreworks is a company that produces shows/plays for students of all ages. The productions are wonderful especially for my students who live in East Harlem and never have the opportunity to go to any shows with their families. I would love the opportunity to bring history and novels alive to my students in the next school year.
