After having my own class of 5th graders for 15 years, I now teach my favorite subject, Social Studies to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th AND 6th graders! I'm really excited to reach and teach about 400 exuberant students each year. However they do come from difficult circumstances. We are an NYC (inner-city) public school. We're across the street from the housing project where most of my kids live.
In this economy, extra money for the "extras" in education are difficult to come by. "Extras" are schoolwork magazines, field trips, and several notebooks throughout the year. Our school even provides breakfast (during the summer too) and lunches. If we do get to go on a trip, students usually get a school lunch, instead of bringing a lunch from home.
The "extras" that I try to attain for my students I feel aren't extras, they are NECESSITIES to make a well-rounded student.
