This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing.
- James Brown
As an educator with the wonderful opportunity to teach the entire school I am honestly blessed. Our scholars are creative professionals with a passion to exceed not only through their academics but in their artistic journeys as well. This year I would like to challenge the traditional set up of a dance classroom. Every scholar in the Dance Department (The entire school) gives 100% in the classroom. I want the students to feel as if the dance room is a Zen room, a place where they can share their love for the arts, but also feel as if they can be at peace.
As a Title 1 Arts Magnet, our in-school and community resources are limited. Our scholars come from various cultural and economic backgrounds. Every day the scholars enter the room with a passion that outweighs their personal problems. With the addition of flexible seating and different sections of the room that allows them to cool down, I know that there can be a complete 180 turn around socially and emotionally.
My Project
This project is an initiative to create a zen space for my dance scholars. Instead of a cool down corner during stressful moments, I would like to have a Zen space for the students to relax and then return to dance mode.
Help me bring ZENsational learning back to the classrooms.
With flexible seating and a designated Zen Zone, the students will be able to grow socially and emotionally without having to feel as if the area is for misbehaved situations.
Getting rid of traditional class management practices can be a great way to help uplift our students, help them feel as if they want to learn, and remind them that their feelings matter!
