Help me give my students everything they need to grow food and flowers. We want to grow vegetables for our school cafeteria so we can all celebrate gardening, healthy eating, and the wonders of nature.
Our garden will provide an outdoor classroom where children can learn about life cycles, seed cultivation and plant growth, photosynthesis, data collection, harvesting, and cooking, all while connecting with nature. We have existing raised beds at our school, but we are hoping to revive our garden space with deer fencing which will protect our plants, fresh compost which will be donated, and new tools and supplies to grow food for our cafeteria this year. Through gardening, kids learn about responsibility, patience, and the rewards of hard work as they nurture plants from seeds to harvest.
It is through the process of growing food, flowers, and herbs that all children in our school will learn to explore the cycles of nature while learning that they can grow their own healthy food.
Our garden will promote many types of learning including scientific investigation, physical activity, an understanding of nature and farming, and so much more. It will also foster a sense of environmental stewardship by teaching children about the importance of sustainable practices and biodiversity. It is our hope that our garden will also help us learn important life skills like working together, supporting each others' ideas, the value of working with our hands, and connection to community as we work toward a mutual goal.
