First graders are fascinating to teach because they love to learn; my challenge while working with seven year olds, is keeping their attention and engaging each student in different ways. We live in a rural Title I school district, with a majority receiving free and reduced-price lunches. Some of the kids' most positive experiences are at school.
Students need hands-on engaging experiences to create excitement and a love for learning.
Students thrive off of authentic purposes to read and write! I found Who Would Win Books a few years ago and have coveted them ever since. Kids love listening to the facts wagering if their chosen animal will win in the end! First graders will complete an animal research project studying different adaptations and environments.
After researching online and the book resources through this grant, students will create a physical design of their Ultimate Animal using Model Magic.
The colored markers will let students' imagination come to life! Students will use their background knowledge of animals and how their external parts help them survive, grow, and meet their needs in certain climates. Then, students will ask questions, make observations, gather information over the Ultimate Animal that can survive in any environment.
More than half of students from low‑income households
