My students attend a Title I, low income school, but don't let that fool you! What they lack socioeconomically, they more than make up for with dedication and hard work. These kids are going places, if only given the right tools. My students are struggling readers who display grade level deficits. Yet, reading is the foundation on which all other skills build. In order for these children to be successful, we must utilize an array of resources to promote learning.
This holiday season, we would like to read The Carpenter's Gift. The story is set during the Great Depression, and will allow us to launch our new learning unit about this time in history. Plus, it will provide valuable background information for an event that is typically difficult for our students to comprehend.
This book is a tale about how kindness can abound, even in the worst circumstances.
While kindness is a virtue that we seek daily to instill in our students, being able to read this story will give us a deeper understanding that it is not just a one time gesture, but an attitude and a way of life that extends far beyond the season of giving!
