The Road Tour of History: Learning Outside the Classroom

My students need clipboards to record their discoveries outside of the classroom, when doing fieldwork in the fabulous city of Boston.

My Students

I teach American history to a vibrant and intellectual group of sophomores at a large public exam school in Boston. My classes represent a true cross section of the city. The language, ethnic, racial and class diversity in each of my classes provides an opportunity for students to not just learn from me, their teacher, but also from their fellow students.

My students enthusiastically engage in academic work that challenges them intellectually, as well as feels authentic and meaningful to the world we live in now.

They are not afraid to create freeze frame stories of history, debate a historical question from a position they do not personally agree, present a case in a moot Supreme court, or write a public policy critique with a historical lens.

It really is my pleasure and honor to teach my students. Therefore, it is my responsibility to keep my curriculum fresh and rigorous. I am approaching DonorsChoose.org to bring more opportunities and authentic tools into the classroom and get my students out into the world. As one student said this year, "This is the first year that studying history meant anything to me." I want to keep it that way.

My Project

I like to plan curriculum that connects my students to the real world and very rarely do adults remain passively sitting in their seats all day in the real world. Learning and creating requires action. Clipboards will allow my students to get up to do their work all around the classroom, in non traditional groupings and even on the floor when they are creating products.

As students venture out the school building to observe history in the making, they can tuck their clipboards under their arms and have a writing surface anywhere, on the MBTA, at a school board meeting, or even at an archeological dig.

Floppy note-taking sheets waste time and make kids unmotivated about capturing their thoughts and reactions to the world.
