Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Where do you feel safe? For all of my students school is a haven where they can come to feel safe, expand their mind, and feel that someone cares for them and believes that they can succeed.

My students have a daily reminder of the violence and poverty that they live in.

In the past week alone there have been three gang related shootings within several blocks of the school and their homes. Even with these daily reminders, my students come to school with smiles on their faces wanting to learn and succeed in school. They find immense joy in the discovery of learning, reading a new book, or doing an art project to showcase their creative side.

My Project

I want my students to have all the tools necessary at their fingertips to be successful scholars. Unfortunately, the school that I am at has very little in their budget for classroom supplies and my students are lacking many of these necessities that make learning fun and enjoyable. Small things, like having enough pencils, paper and a comfortable place to read a book, make a huge difference in these students lives. Having these resources will make the class day run smoother. Things like having individual whiteboards so the students can show each other how they worked out a math problem can have a huge impact on their learning. Having a comfortable place to sit while they dive into a new book can help cultivate their love of reading. Being in an environment where they feel comfortable and have the correct supplies to facilitate their education helps students on the road to becoming scholars and successful adults.

I really and truly believe that all of my students can be successful in and out of the classroom if they are cared for and shown HOW to be successful.

Having a well stocked classroom and making a caring and comfortable environment lets the students know that they truly are cared for and that they are worth every bit of time and energy that goes into the school day and beyond.
