Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Only six percent of students in the inner city were I teach go onto attend college. Fostering a love of reading can change this.

I teach ninth graders at a high school that receives students who have not been culled for magnet or other programs; students who have not been accepted to the charters popping up all around us; students who have been rejected by the K-12 school near us because, after attending for eight or nine years, the school has decided that they are not good enough to continue.

My students use oppositional behaviors to avoid the message of inadequacy the school system has been sending them for years.

My Project

In twelve years of teaching English, I have found that nothing can transform a resistant student into an academic like that one book that captures their interest and fills them with a sense of accomplishment and a thirst for more. The wide range of fiction and non-fiction books I am requesting will suddenly appear in the classroom. My students will have the chance to pick through books about the topics they have been asking to read.

The difference between a ninth grader who never finds that one book that interests her and the one who finds the first she ever wanted to read is monumental.

Each year, students return to borrow books and get suggestions for what to read. With your help the number of students who return to check in find a book will triple.
