I teach first grade in a small, rural town in Augusta, Kentucky. We are located along the Ohio River about 45 minutes southeast of Cincinnati, OH about an hour northeast of Lexington, KY. Our school is a small, independent school district that serves approximately 300 students K-12. All of our students receive free and reduced price lunch.
My students come from various backgrounds.
With these backgrounds, they are expected to reach the same targets, despite of what positive and negative influences students have been exposed to.
I do not live in this community, but my heart has been here for the last 18 years. Because of our school being so small, teachers have the advantage of knowing many students and families before they reach our classroom. The faculty and staff school culture is wonderful. We truly are a family at this school.
My Project
Scholastic News is a great non-fiction resource that has a variety of topics in science and social studies. The topics spark an interest in students' reading and learning and exposes them to different reading material.
This resource also comes with supplemental technology and Common Core Reading activities as well.
These activities help keep students engaged with the topic they are reading about such as videos to generate background knowledge and questions about the topic, interactive games to play after the articles are read to help assess students' understanding of the topic, and worksheets that are related to the curriculum being taught in the classroom.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Blackaby and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
