This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Writing is a powerful tool, and my students need to understand its importance!

I teach Sophomore English in an under resourced school where my students' literacy skills are behind those of their peers in more affluent areas.

To help my students catch up and be college ready, we are engaging in rigorous academic content, including reading challenging books, engaging in thought-provoking discussions, and critically thinking and writing about themes presented through literature.

My Project

As my students are engaging in this content, I have been helping them make the connections between our class and their own lives. Unfortunately, many students to do not see the importance of reading and writing in their academic/career futures or their personal lives. I need my students to understand the power of reading and writing so they become life-long readers and writers and the hard work we are doing does not end when they leave my class. I want my students to learn how powerful reading and writing can be through personal stories. One story that that will accomplish this is "The Blue Notebook." Through this book, students will learn that writing can be a cathartic experience as they see how it saved one girl's life.

Bring the power of words to my students by helping us get copies of "The Blue Notebook." My students will learn a valuable lesson about the role of writing in their lives as they gain the literacy skills they need to be college ready.
