My Students

Do you remember the joy of the first day of school? Exploring your new classroom, reveling at the plethora of books in the room's Library? I have a passion for reading that is contagious and is quickly 'infecting' more and more students in my classroom. They yearn to read high-quality literature!

I teach in an urban school in Minneapolis.

My students are intelligent, kind and caring individuals. They are capable of anything they set their minds to. Unfortunately, many of them were not read to as children and have no books in their home. Too many students face financial hardships, abuse and neglect. Ninety-four percent of our families are considered 'impoverished.' Despite the tumultuous upbringing some of them have faced, their desire to learn and achieve their goals is inspiring. Our school has been slowly but surely closing the achievement gap, but we still have room to grow. Immersing my students in quality literature and providing them with materials they aren't able to have at home will help them reach their goals.

My Project

I strive to provide data-drive curriculum in a family-like, caring atmosphere. Part of my 'caring atmosphere' is providing a comfortable, organized classroom library with books my students are excited about. Richard Allington, a literacy expert, suggests having a classroom library with 750-1,500 books in the classroom. My classroom library is well under this amount. While I try to shop for books as much as possible at book stores, thrift shops, book fairs, etc., I need help reaching this goal. My goal is to develop such a large classroom library of books so that there are enough for each student to have their own 'Book Bin'. Each student's Book Bin would be filled with books appropriate to their reading level and interests. I want to try my very best to provide the richest literature on the market. If students have excellent, high-quality literature at their fingertips, this will enable them to reach the high comprehension, fluency, phonics, and vocabulary goals we've set.

Your donations will help me give the gift of reading to my students.

This gift of reading will last them a lifetime. Reading has the power to transform them; move them from poverty to independence. Reading has the power to capture their hearts, souls and minds. Reading has the power to take them out of their environment and help them travel to new places, new ideas. I teach my students to set high goals for themselves and REACH them. Your gift of literature to my students will change lives!
