The calculators were immediately a big hit with students. When I unveiled the calculators for the first time, several classes were so excited I was met with applause, and students quickly got to work using the calculators to help them figure out math problems. \r\n\r\nThe calculators have especially been valuable with my 8th graders, who have been hard at work finding volume and area. They were relieved to be able to find the volume of a sphere quickly and efficiently by simplying using the \"pi\" button on the calculator, rather than having to multiply by 3.14 each time to approximate the volume; this saved them lots of time getting bogged down with computation, and let them focus on the vital task of identifying which formula to use for volume instead.\r\n\r\nThe cleaning supplies have also played an unexpectedly huge role in classroom community. Every Friday, I assign one student to spray each desk with cleaning spray, while another student passes out rags to wipe down the desks. This cleaning ritual has helped my energetic students unite on a common goal, and I now have students asking me if they can be the next student to spray down the desks so they can participate in keeping their class clean.
