The Outsiders

My students need 50 copies of "The Outsiders" to fulfill our literature unit. This a great coming of age novel, and my freshmen will love it.

My Students

A typical day with my freshman is exhaustingly beautiful. They are an upbeat group and extremely eager to learn. However, many of them have mentioned that they do not like to read. I feel like the book, "The Outsiders," is the right book to get them started.

My students are very eclectic.

They come from many different backgrounds. The school is in a rural community. There are not a lot of options for entertainment in the area surrounding the school. These students work hard, even when they are not in school. Many live on farms or have after-school jobs. They have been sheltered in many ways. I feel as though "The Outsiders" will be a good book to introduce them to a different variety of teenagers and a part of history that they may be foreign to.

My Project

We will read this book, "The Outsiders" together in class. My students will be able to differentiate between different times and cultures. They will be involved in a variety of activities that will help them make connections to the novel, make connections between the novel and the real world, and help them gain insight to themselves as individuals.

This donation will improve my classroom.

Without it, we will be reading books at a low interest level. This book will engage them in their reading, and help them develop a love for reading. This project will educate them in different cultures, and help them to see that everyone, no matter how rich or poor they may be, has a unique set of problems.
