Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We all believe reading is important, yet many times the books that end of in classrooms are those curated by a district or donation, rather than specifically by the students and teacher. The goal of this project is to curate a distinct 12th grade class library where students have access to books that can help them transition as readers in high school to readers of the world.

There is something magical about the right book at the end of high school that unlocks a realization about the world, yourself, or the beauty of language itself.

I also know that students respond best to book recommendations that are personal and come directly from people them know and trust - their teachers, a friend, family.

My school is situated in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and serves approximately 400 students of color, from all over the five boroughs. Students choose to travel, sometimes 2 hours one-way, because our school is a safe space for them to be who they are and to find a sense of belonging. We have students who are traveling across the world for vacation and students who are trying to secure their next meal, all learning and growing together. The English classroom bridges experiences and allows all students, no matter their circumstance, to enter into new worlds and put themselves in others' shoes.
