Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a School Social Worker in an urban high school in which my students unfortunately experience severe trauma, involvement in child protective services, battling ADD/ADHD, anxiety/depression, as well as the looming, and frightening threat of immigration enforcement. These are just a small amount of the adversities my students are expected to face every day as just young teenagers. Every day, I see the intense and cumbersome impact these stressors have on my students. This is the unfortunate reality of a majority children who reside in urban areas.

According to research, mindfulness practices can assist teens in developing mental resilience, self-awareness, and regulation skills that will lead them to take accountability for their decisions, relationships, and behavior.

I am planning to create a space in which students feel safe, calm, and empowered. Many students go home to dysfunctional households where there is little to no respite from chaos. To these students, going to school can be an added stressor. This mindfulness corner will give them a much needed break from it all.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
